George Shirk, Lucyl Shirk

Oklahoma City native George H. Shirk had many roles during his life - mayor, historian, attorney, civic leader - and was an early friend of the Oklahoma City Community Foundation. Mr. Shirk played an integral role in the establishment an endowment fund for the Oklahoma Westerners Indian Territory Posse, a group of Western history buffs.

In 1970, he and his sister, Lucyl Shirk, established the Carrie Shirk Memorial Fund in their mother's memory and asked that it be used for the best interest of the community. Today, the fund supports the Fund for Oklahoma City Grant Fund, William Fremont Harn Gardens and Homestead and other charitable organization endowments. Following George’s death in 1977, a bequest in his estate benefitted an additional five charitable organization endowments at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation.
