Mr. Wendell Steward was a highly respected construction expert in central Oklahoma who felt strongly about encouraging interested individuals to pursue a degree in construction management. He graduated from the University of Houston in 1956 with one of the first degrees awarded in construction management.
During his career that included a move to the Oklahoma City area in 1972, Mr. Steward often donated his expertise to various private and public development efforts in the metropolitan area. He had a true passion for building and was honored as the Builder of the Year three times, receiving the lifetime achievement award from the Central Oklahoma Homebuilders Association.
Following his death in 2007, the Southwest Home Builders Association established a permanent scholarship fund at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation in his honor for students pursuing a career in the construction industry.
