For Enid, Oklahoma, native Joe Singer, entering the oil business was a given. After graduating from Oklahoma City University, he joined the family business, learning the ropes at Tiger Drilling in the wide open plains of Wyoming. Upon his return to Oklahoma, he drilled and operated many wells before co-founding Singer Brothers Oil Company with his brother Alex.
Simply by chance, Joe met the love of his life, Janice Yarchin on a blind date when Janice came to Oklahoma City to visit a friend. In 1957, Janice moved from her home in Boston to marry Joe, beginning a long and loving partnership filled with family, friends, travel and joy. Known as a generous, kind-hearted couple, they involved themselves in all aspects of community life serving the boards of many community organizations and answering the call whenever Emanuel Synagogue or Temple B’nai Israel needed their help.
In 1996, the couple established an advised fund at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation through which they supported a number of charitable causes. After Joe's death in 2003, a substantial gift from his estate created the Janice and Joe L. Singer Family Affiliated Fund. Janice died in 2017, but their family's permanent endowment will perpetuate their support of charities within the community.
