In the late 1800s, as Oklahoma became a boom area, Jewish peddlers and salesmen found their way here, becoming some of our state's first shopkeepers and merchants and a cornerstone of their communities.
As the Jewish community centralized in Oklahoma City, they looked for a way to honor their religion and serve the social welfare needs of the community. In 1941, they established the Jewish Federation of Greater Oklahoma City. Today, the Jewish Federation sponsors educational, cultural and community outreach programs and services as well as serves an important safety net for individuals and families in need.
In 1999, the Jewish Federation of Greater Oklahoma City transferred several funds to the Oklahoma City Community Foundation that make up the Oklahoma City Jewish Community Foundation, ensuring the continuity of a strong, vibrant Jewish community and enhancing the quality of Jewish life by supporting both Jewish and general community causes. Supporters of the Jewish Federation contribute to the endowment each year.
